THE African Union (AU) has appealed to Uganda and the international community to step
up humanitarian assistance and efforts for a peaceful resolution of the war-ravaged
northern Uganda.
The AU peace and security commissioner, Said Djinnit, yesterday said humanitarian
assistance was as vital as the search for a lasting solution to the war.
"Over one million people are displaced in camps and their situation is not the best.
We need to do more because the World Food Programme has distributed food but it has
not been enough, in addition to scarce non-food items," he said.
Speaking in Kampala after a fact-finding visit to the north and east of the country,
Djinnit said he would present the findings to the AU peace and security committee soon.
He said the AU was capable of dealing with such crises and should not wait for
external intervention to end the turbulence.
We need closer co-operation with the two countries," he said.

"The commitment for a peaceful end to the conflict has been made at the highest level,
which is a good move. But we encourage dialogue because it would prevent further
suffering of the people," he said.
AU senior military expert Lt. Col Khalifi, political analyst Dr A.M Kambudzi and
senior political officer McLean Mayanja travelled with Djinnit.
