The most violent episode took place on a crowded street near the âgreen zoneâ, not far from the offices of the future Iraqi Premier and US administration headquarters: âA Mercedes suddenly spun round the corner and explodedâ, explained a US military source, specifying that the splinters caused by the blast struck four bystanders, including the little girl. Reports arrived yesterday of other violence on Sunday in several parts of the nation: two American soldiers were killed in two distinct clashes south of the Shiite city of Kufa, in which, according to local sources, also twenty-some Iraqi militants and a woman were killed. The woman was shot by error by US armed forces in her home with her husband and children, three of which were wounded. Always yesterday, news arrived of the assassination on Sunday of Qahtan al Rubai, a top representative of the Iraqi Islamic party. The report was issued by sources of the political formation, which has representatives in the Iraqi Governing Council, specifying that their representative was ambushed by unidentified armed men in Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad.
