My Memories Of
President Reagan

From A Citizen

Jeff,
On his inauguration day, he ordered the solar panel on the White House be taken down. The heck with future energy planning despite the previous energy crisis.
Even before taking office his people worked behind the scenes to have the hostages in Iran be released on his inauguration day instead of an immediate release. American were left to languish in a nearly hopeless situation unnecessarily.
He cut federal programs for state and local government assistance. That would be a good thing if he didn't quadruple the national debt from $1 trillion to $4 trillion. Meanwhile, because of the cuts, local governments and states had to literally double our property taxes.
He wasted billions of dollars on "Star Wars" which is still no closer to working and would not have protected us on 9-11 anyhow.
He gave us Iran Contra...usurping America's wishes and the democratic process.
Nancy was busy with horoscopes and timed certain projects they worked on to coincide with favorable stars.
The Challenger disaster would not have occurred if Reagan hadn't called NASA the day before to pressure them to launch. His teacher-in-space program would look much better the next day if launched in time for his scheduled State of the Union Address.
His S&L legislation to ease restrictions on lending caused the largest financial disaster in the history of the world (until Enron came along.) Reagan said this would be a day long remembered in history when he signed the legislation. Some of Reagan's friends were able to buy failed S&Ls for 1/3 the value and one buyer received nearly a billion dollar tax break as a reward. We are still paying for the S&L bailout.
Reagan joked about nuclear bombing the Soviet Union.
In the last two years of his presidency, doctors hid the fact that his cat scans clearly showed diminished brain function. I talked to his radiologist in person in Bethesda MD where he worked at the Naval Hospital.
The Great Communicator was a smoke and mirrors Hollywood stooge. But he had a lot of appeal to those easily entertained.
I hope he doesn't end up on my dimes, my $10 dollar bills, or Mount Rushmore as a radical group of right-wing true believers are pushing for. They want a memorial in every single county in the US, too.

A lie too far this time...
"The Challenger disaster would not have occurred if Reagan hadn't called NASA the day before to pressure them to launch. His teacher-in-space program would look much better the next day if launched in time for his scheduled State of the Union Address."
This goes beyond the fringe of tolerable lunatic ravings -- these people were my friends, and there was no White House pressure, and I am disgusted that some anonymous hate-mongering liar is trying to use their coffins as his soapbox, and that you let him do so.
