The army yesterday afternoon battled suspected Interahamwe at the Uganda- DR Congo
border post of Bunagana, in Kisoro. Sources told The Monitor yesterday afternoon that
the battle started at about 2.30 pm and went on till late in the afternoon.
"There were some other clashes reported in Bwindi impenetrable forests. There was
heavy gunfire in Bunagana that lasted the whole afternoon," a military source based in
Kisoro told The Monitor correspondent in Kabale.
Kisoro Resident District Commissioner, Mr David Maseruka confirmed the fighting but
couldn't divulge the details. "I have also received the same information but we are
going into a meeting. Call me after the meeting," the RDC said yesterday afternoon.
The RDC talked to The Monitor at about 5.00 pm but was not yet out of the meeting by
the time we went to press.
Sources further said more fighting occurred in, Muramba sub county, Kisoro and
Mgahinga national park. The UPDF second division commander, Col. Hudson Mukasa, said
the situation in Congo was volatile and forcing refugees into Uganda.
"We are closely monitoring the situation in the DRC," he said. Tanzanian gunmen, at
first suspected to be interahamwe made an incursion into the Uganda border district of
Rakai, a couple of weeks ago. They shot and injured nine people.

The assailants attacked eight families in the raid that took place in Sango Bay -
robbing money and other households. "These were common border thugs. They made the
incursion and later retreated to Tanzania," Army spokesman, Maj. Shaban Bantariza said
then.
