Kampala

MBARARA municipality mayor Wilson Tumwine has asked the defence ministry to involve
the army in handling traffic duties, saying it is more equipped than the Police.

"It's very absurd to see Mbarara Police using one pickup to handle a road accident in
which 100 people have sustained serious injuries. The Army has enough vehicles and
helicopters," he said.

Meeting the defence ministry principal policy analyst, Kevin Balaba, in Mbarara on
Friday, Tumwine said every government department should take part in ensuring security
in the country.

Balaba said the defence ministry reform team had resolved that religious leaders play
a key role in improving national security because they meet people more often than the
Army and district leaders.

"However, this reform will not happen overnight," he said.
