Rebel scare hits Kasese By Michael Karugaba June 18, 2004 KASESE â Residents are in a state of panic following reports that suspected rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) had crossed into the district from eastern DR Congo.
On Wednesday, residents in Bwera town told The Monitor that hundreds of rebels crossed from the DR Congo on Tuesday night through Kitholhu and Ihandiro sub-counties, which border Congo. They claim the rebels disappeared between Mitimusanju and Kibisire, both in Bwera sub-county. The 507 Brigade Public Relations Officer, 2nd Lt. Maate Magwara, yesterday said he had heard about the scare. âSomebody has just rang me from Kasese that people have started fleeing the possible attack,â Magwara said from Kampala. He said the Army had since beefed up security at the border ready for any possible attack. The 507 Brigade Commander, Lt. Col. David Kabangira, said no single rebel had crossed to Kasese. âI have talked to the local leaders and the forces in the area. There is no rebel who has crossed to Kasese,â he said.
