The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has formerly requested President Benjamin Mkapa 
of Tanzania to help fight off rebel forces.

President Mkapa is the current chairman of the SADC bloc of countries.

  
The message was delivered here yesterday to the Tanzania Minister for Foreign Affairs 
and International Cooperation, Mr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, by his DRC counterpart Mr 
Mbussa Nyamwisi who was accompanied by the DRC Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Juma Khalfan 
Mpango.

However, the discussions were held in camera.

Minister Kikwete did not disclose to the press any information in relation to the 
discussions. Mr Nyamwisi and his delegation left for DRC via Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Other sources in Dodoma said DRC is seeking both military and diplomatic assistance in 
fighting the rebels.
