Museveni to decide on URA contract

By Yunusu Abbey
PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni is expected to make a final
verdict on Uganda Revenue Authority (URA)
Commissioner-General (C.G), Annebritt Aslund’s
contract which expires this week.
Sources said this follows disagreement among some top
finance ministry officials over the renewal of
Aslund’s contract.

“The delay in giving a final position over the matter
is mainly because some top officials in the finance
ministry are opposed to the renewal of Aslund’s
contract for personal reasons,” said a source.
“It is still a tricky situation because although her
contract expires this Friday, up to now, there is no
communication over the issue,” said a source.
“There are allegations that due to her strictness and
firmness in tax collection, Aslund could have stepped
on those officials’ business interests. That could be
one of the reasons they don’t want her back in
office,” he said.

But sources said at this rate, Museveni would have to
intervene to make the final decision over the matter.
Finance minister Gerald Ssendaula who signs the C.G’s
appointment letter, was unavailable for comment.
Lobbyists had already floated some names as possible
replacements.

The finance ministry was reportedly interested in
giving the job to Damino Kitabire but he rejected the
offer.

Other sources said there was a lot of politics
involved.

The sources said under normal circumstances, Aslund
cannot continue sitting in office when she hasn’t been
notified about the Government position.
