Excitement gripped Tororo and Malaba on Monday afternoon when the residents saw a train carrying new Bank of Uganda currency notes and coins cross into Uganda.
Many curious people in Tororo town pushed their way into the railway station following a rumour that the bank wanted casual labourers to reload the money onto the waiting bullion vans.
However, many would-be casual labourers were disappointed when the special train left for Kampala in about five minutes under tight security.
�The man who mobilised us had assured us that anybody who would offload 10 boxes of the cash would be paid sh100,000. We hurried here thinking we had landed into things,� a man said.
A bank official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the South Africa-minted money would replace old and destroyed currency.
