KAMPALA - The Buganda cabinet yesterday called off the Kingdomâs colonial
celebrations in protest at the governmentâs rejection of a federal system. But the
Kingdom says the planned demonstration is on today.

The celebrations were slated for July 31 in Kayunga district. The Katikkiro, Joseph
Ssemwogerere, said there was no reason for Buganda to celebrate when their interests
are neglected. âWe should instead mourn for the time we have spent hoodwinked.â

He said the Kabakaâs 11th coronation anniversary was called off to express
Bugandaâs anger against the government that had deliberately refused to grant the
Kingdom a federal system of governance, to return Kampala to Buganda and the 9,000
square miles to the Buganda Land Board.

âThere is no cause for our celebration. We have to keep mourning instead. On behalf
of the cabinet, the Kingdom elders (Abataka), I call off the coronation
celebrations,â Ssemwogerere said after a cabinet meeting at Bulange.

He explained that Bugandaâs interests were clearly voted for by the majority in the
Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) and the government stand on federalism, among
other issues indicates an intended plan to exploit Buganda.

Ministers resolved to turn the coronation day into a day of mourning where the Kabaka
and his cabinet will attend mourning services in Mosques on Friday July 30, the
Seventh Day Adventist services on July 31 and other Christian Churches on Sunday
August 1.

The move, the cabinet believes, will demonstrate Bagandaâs anger against the Cabinet
for âgrabbingâ the powers of the peasants who voted massively for a federal system
of governance.
