By Jude Etyang
JINJA and Mukono districts are set to start earning 1.5% of the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd (UEGCL)s annual gross revenue from Nalubaale and Kiira power stations.
The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) set the percentage as royalties payable by UEGCL to the Jinja and Mukono district administration for accommodating the stations.
ERA legal officer Sarah Birungi said the decision takes effect this year but the percentage levy is only applicable this year and is subject to review.
Percentages are always reviewed, depending on how the company is performing, said Birungi.
Under the Electricity Act Section 76 (8), a percentage of revenue should be paid as royalty to the district administration.
The decision that was agreeable to all parties enables the district to execute a reasonable levy of 1.5% of gross revenue received by UEGCL from the sale of electricity generated from the stations, said Birungi.Published on: Tuesday, 10th August, 2004
The notion of revenue sharing was aired sometime on there net-fora. This is a good start, but the percentage is too small. It should be at least 10%. The locals then decide what to do with their money, as in federo.
