KAMPALA - The Democratic Party mainstream leadership yesterday told off ex mayor Hajji Nasser Sebaggala and advised him to form his own party. DP president general Dr Paul Semogerere said: DP is not a party for businessmen. Its a mass party and whatever is done must be in line with its constitution. He was addressing the press at the partys headquarters, yesterday.
His remarks came a day after Sebaggala announced the formation of a 56-member task force to work towards registration of the DP before September 30. Addressing journalists at his Bugolobi residence, Friday, Sebaggala said: The Constitutional Court successfully addressed our key disagreements in the Political Organisations Act (POA) in regard to section 18 and 19 of the Act and government has now withdrawn its appeal. The DP process management committee that was supposed to lead the DP to a successful rejuvenation has miserably failed in this important task and now faces serious questions of legitimacy, he said further, before announcing a 56-man committee, which would traverse the country seeking signatures from party faithful to have the party registered in accordance with the POA. The apparently angry Semogerere told journalists that the DP belongs to the past, present and future generations but not only to current generation of politicians whose agenda is to tear the party apart. He said if any democrat had a new idea, he/she should follow the partys constitution and table it for discussion before an all embracing decision were reached. Semogerere warned party faithful to shun Sebaggalas registration exercise, through which he is seeking signatures across the country. He also announced that the party was currently drawing up an internal road map which would lead to a delegates conference, through which new office bearers would be elected. The partys secretary general, Mayor Sebaana Kizito scoffed at Sebaggala. On a cynical note, he said that the degree in Political Science and Economics, which Sebaggala claims to have earned from the UK was negatively impacting on his reasoning capacity. |
