Ugandan army kills 7 warriors - East African Standard Nairobi - Kenya.

KAMPALA, Tuesday, 21st September 2004

Ugandan soldiers killed seven Karamojong warriors in some of the bloodiest clashes since the military revived a campaign to disarm cattle rustlers this month, the army said today.

The military is intensifying efforts to stamp out violence among the nomadic Karamojong in eastern Uganda, where herders frequently fight over cattle whose milk and skins form the foundation for their tribal way of life.

"Six warriors were killed on Friday when they attacked our position at a place called Bukwa in Kapchorwa district," army spokesman Lieutenant Ronald Kakurungu said.

"They were repulsed and put out of action. The next day another warrior was killed when they tried another attack near Nakapiripirit," he said by telephone.

Kapchorwa and Nakapiripirit are about 400 km northeast of the capital Kampala.

It was the most serious clash between the army and Karamojong to be reported since late August, when six tribal fighters and three government troops were killed.

Kakurungu said three civilians had been killed by Karamojong warriors on Saturday at Amudat, Moroto district.

"It is true, civilians are being killed," he said. "Cattle rustlers are armed warriors. When they come to raid, they come with aggression and force, and that is how people are killed."

Cattle raiders who previously used arrows and spears now use automatic weapons and often leave a trail of dead in raids which can involve several hundred fighters and large herds of cows. —Reuters
