Zim-Mozambique solidarity bash roars into life
>From Jonathan Mbiriyamveka in CHIMOIO, Mozambique
THOUSANDS are today expected to attend the Zimbabwe-Mozambique Solidarity Bash to
celebrate the friendship between the two countries and honour cadres massacred by
Rhodesian forces at Chimoio Training Camp during the liberation war.
Before the evening bash, the crowd will be afforded an opportunity to tour the Chimoio
Training Camp where the massacres took place at the height of the liberation war in
the late 1970s.
A high-powered delegation will lead the pilgrimage which will include senior
Government officials, war veterans, musicians and music lovers.
The tour is expected to start in the morning followed by a tour of sub-camps within
the Chimoio major camp.
"This is a symbolic gesture to honour the late gallant fighters who were massacred
during the liberation struggle. A high-powered delegation will lead the tour of the
shrines that are in Chimoio," an official from the Department of Information and
Publicity in the Office of the President and Cabinet said.
The bash starts at 6:00pm today and will be beamed live on Zimbabwe and Mozambique
national televisions.
There are also plans to broadcast it in Angola and Namibia after the two countries
expressed interest to beam the event on their national televisions.
More than 30 musicians from Zimbabwe and Mozambique are billed to perform at the bash,
the first of its kind in Southern Africa.
Some of the Zimbabwean musicians taking part include veteran sungura maestro Tongai
"Dhewa" Moyo, Khiama Boys' "Senior Lecturer" Nicholas Zacharia, Clive Malunga, famed
for his hit Nesango, Simon "Chopper" Chimbetu, township jazzist Tanga wekwaSando, Cde
Chinx and lyricist Hosiah Chipanga.
The line-up also includes upcoming Zimbabwean young artists Xtra Large, the trio of
Leonard Mapfumo, Rocqui and Maskiri, Sku, Nonsikelelo and Sandra Ndebele, popularly
known as the "dancing queen" by her legion of fans.
And from Mozambique, there is a variety of artists to satisfy all the tastes including
Djaka, Massukos, Wizzy Masuke of "Aimahala" fame.
The all-night bash looks set to be a thriller considering the success of several galas
held so far in Zimbabwe such as the Umdala Wethu Gala which celebrates the life and
history of the late Vice-President Dr Joshua Nkomo, the Hereosplush held in
remembrance of the thousands of cadres who died fighting for Zimbabwe's independence
and the recently held MzeeBira, which celebrates the life of the late Vice- President
Dr Simon Muzenda.
The Solidarity Bash is expected to revive the spirit of the Zimbabwe Mozambique
Friendship Association (Zimofa), which was a symbol of the friendly relations between
the two neighbouring countries.
Speaking on the eve of the bash, the Minister of Information and Publicity in the
Office of the President and Cabinet, Professor Jonathan Moyo, said there was every
reason to celebrate the solidarity between Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
He said those who say the solidarity should not be celebrated were by definition
"enemies and merchants of confusion".
"We should pay homage and celebrate the solidarity. This is yet another way of
recalling our Independence which has meaning throughout the year," said Prof Moyo.
He said Zimbabweans should not apologise for celebrating their victory over the
Rhodesian forces and the fact that Chimoio was significant in the liberation struggle.
