BORDER POST WITH RWANDA CLOSED FOLLOWING SECURITY AGREEMENT
Politics/Economy Politics/Economy, Brief

The authorities of Democratic Republic of Congo have decided to close a border post with Rwanda, the Chinese news agency Xinhua has said, quoting the Rwandan foreign minister Charles Murigande, who declined to comment further. The news of the closure of the border post on what is one of the most tense frontiers in the Great Lakes region comes just a few hours after the signing of an agreement between the two countries and Uganda on regional security. Local sources report that the Congolese foreign minister Ramazan Baya decided to close the Rusizi border post due to poor relations with Rwanda. There have been recent reports of incidents allegedly involving Rwandan traders on Congolese territory; it seems that the last episode dates back to last week, when a Rwandan businessman was reportedly killed in Bukavu, the city that came under attack from groups of insurgents led by Banyamulenge (ie Congolese T utsi) ex rebels close to Rwanda in May and June, when over 80 people were killed. The agreement signed yesterday contains a new accord for the disarmament of all rebel groups present in the area; they are unanimously considered the main threat for the great lakes region. [LC]
