KAMPALA - The Minister of Finance, Mr Gerald Sendaula has sacked the board the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), The Monitor has learnt.

The sacking followed accusations of financial impropriety in the controversial joint venture housing deal between NSSF and Mugoya Construction Company.

The NSSF was supposed to build about 400 housing units at Nsimbe on the Kampala-Masaka Road.
But the deal went sour after the Internal Security Organisation Economic Affairs Director, Mr Teddy Seezi Cheeye, blew the whistle on the deal that implicated the NSSF officers in corruption.

In a letter dated November 15, Sendaula wrote to the chairman of the NSSF board, Mr Onegi-Obel, he said, "This is to inform you that following a completion of the investigations into allegations of impropriety in the management of NSSF affairs and in the exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 2 (3) of the 1995 NSSF Act, your appointment as chairman NSSF Board of Directors is hereby revoked with immediate effect."

In the letter, which was also copied to the other members of the NSSF board, Onegi was ordered to hand over any property or instrument of office belonging to NSSF to the acting Managing Director Mr Martin Wandebere.

Wandebere was the Corporation Secretary before he was appointed MD at NSSF.

Some of the members on the board are Baitera Maiteki, Aloysius Semanda, Rosemary Sinabulya and L Ongaba. President Yoweri Museveni on September 21 ordered the sacking of the Managing Director of the Managing Director, Mr Leonard Mpuuma. The President also ordered the Minister of Finance, Mr Gerald Sendaula, to disband the board of director.

Museveni then directed his personal secretary, Amelia Kyambadde, to write to Sendaula instructing him to implement the aforementioned directives.

Sendaula, however, didnt effect the order. Finance instead suspended the board. Sources said the President had initially dismissed Mpuuma but was advised that it was not consistent with the law. Mpuumas dismissal was then scaled down to suspension.
