KAMPALA - Mr Joseph Musasizi Kifefe, the youngest brother to Col. Dr Kizza Besigye, was yesterday remanded to Kigo Prison on treason charges.
Musasizi, 40, a resident of Kalina Zone at Namasuba, Kampala, was on Tuesday arrested by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) at Crane Bank on Kampala Road. They linked him to the rebel People's Redemption Army (PRA) operating in the DR Congo under the alleged command of renegade UPDF soldiers, Lt. Colonels Anthony Kyakabale and Samson Mande.

The State added Musasizi on the same file with Mr George William Mugisha, a former commissioner with URA and Dr Besigye's supporter, who was also charged with treason last month. Mugisha, the proprietor of Kyalimanya Ltd, an electronics and stationery shop on Luwum Street in Kampala, is in Kigo Prison.
Musasizi remained composed in the dock as charges of treason and concealment of treason were read to him before the Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate, Ms Justine Atukwasa.

Prosecution contends that Musasizi and Mugisha attempted to overthrow the government.
The two, and others still at large, were allegedly providing logistical support and intelligence information to the PRA between December 2003 and October 2004 in the districts of Kampala, Mpigi, Mbarara, Bushenyi and Kasese.
They are also accused of knowing about PRA rebel activities, but failed to report them to the relevant authorities.

Musasizi, who was represented in Court by Mr Sam Njuba, Mr Peter Walubiri and Mr Yusuf Nsibambi, was remanded until December 13 when he will jointly appear with Mugisha for mention.
His wife, Mrs Christine Musasizi and a group of close relatives looked on in despair as their breadwinner was led to a waiting heavily guarded prison truck.

According to the CMI, the accused have been financing the purchase of over 400 guns to arm the rebels. At least 75 SMG's of the alleged PRA were allegedly recovered from villages at Andiga Hills in Koboko County.

CMI's acting chief, Lt. Col. James Mugira, said Musasizi had been the chief coordinator of PRA activities.
Nsibambi on Wednesday said his client had been forced to sign a false confession statement while in military custody at Summit View in Kololo, where security interrogated him for about six hours.

The Police CID also grilled Musasizi for about six hours at their headquarters in Kam pala before sending his file to the Directorate of Public Prosecution who sanctioned the offence.

He was transferred to the court's cell from the Kampala Central Police Station.
