Increasing reports indicate the presence of Rwandan regular troops in the east Democratic Republic of Congo, though for the moment the MONUC (United Nations Mission in DR-Congo) refers to MISNA that it can give no confirmation. MISNA sources and the BBC correspondent in North Kivu (eastern province of DR-Congo) refer that Rwandan soldiers have already crossed the border and are in the Rutsuru plane. According to the BBC Afrique morning edition, some 4,000 Rwandan regular forces are already present in the area. We have no confirmation to these reports, stated a while ago to MISNA Patricia Tom, MONUC information representative. There are many rumours and indiscretions in circulation. The head of the mission, William Swing, is gathering all the reports and we are constantly monitoring the situation with all the means at our disposal, she added. International press reports indicate that Rwandan ha
s begun
to position troops along the Congolese borders. MISNA sources in Bukavu, capital of the South Kivu province, specify that numerous soldiers and twenty-some tanks were clearly visible in Rwandan territory along the border. Based on further reports, a large part of the troops left the border area between Sunday and Monday, moving 20km further into the territory. [BO] | |
