UN forces deploy near Uganda border

KAMPALA � A contingent of United Nations Monitoring body in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Monuc have deployed one kilometre to Bunagana border in Kisoro following a clash between Rwandan rebels and suspected Rwanda forces over the weekend.
Dozens of blue-beret UN peacekeeping troops have been seen moving tanks and containers on the Congolese side of the border. The deployment comes days after UPDF soldiers on patrol clashed with forces suspected to be the Rwanda Defence Forces (RCD). Rwanda, Uganda and DRC share a common border at Bunagana.
The Monuc office in Kampala declined to comment on the deployments and referred The Monitor to its regional spokesman Mamadou Bah who was out of reach. The LC5 Chairman of the border district of Kisoro, Mr Philemon Mateke, confirmed the deployment.
"The situation is quite alright and the UN has deployed on the other side of the border
on their
routine business," Mateke told The Monitor by telephone yesterday. The deployment follows reports that groups of armed men have been using the route from Rwanda, through Uganda to the northeastern DRC.
Mateke said the district administration is �only making guesses� as to where the forces are from. But military source had told The Monitor that forces were Rwanda troops an allegation Rwanda is still silent about. Monuc says it was getting evidence of Rwanda�s illegal presence in its much bigger neighbour DRC.
Meanwhile Rwanda�s Foreign Affairs Ministry has issued a statement saying the DRC rejected its proposals. |
