UPDF batallion deploys in Yumbe

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered immediate recruitment of a battalion of Local Defence Units (LDUs) in Yumbe district to monitor security at the borders.
Announcing the recruitment in Yumbe on Sunday, army chief Lt. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima said the UPDF 51st battalion headed by Lt. Col. Sam Matovu would deploy in Yumbe.
Aronda said the LDUs would earn salaries after training.
A batallion has 1,000 men.
Last week, the army arrested over 10 People�s Redemption Army (PRA) rebels and their collaborators in Yumbe and Arua districts which border Sudan and the DR Congo. PRA operates in DR Congo, the army says.
Aronda, who was in the West Nile region following the arrest of the PRA suspects, appealed to the residents to join the Government to wipe out the rebels and reject terrorism.
Aronda met Yumbe district leaders in the district boardroom.
He said the Government was committed to implementi ng the peace agreement it signed with the defunct UNRF II rebel group in the region.
Aronda asked the district security committee to strengthen intelligence and hold regular meetings.
