Ugandan gets 26 months in child solicitation case

LAKE COUNTY -- A native of Uganda who worked at a Lake County YMCA camp was sentenced to 26 months in prison Wednesday for soliciting an undercover police officer for sex over the Internet.

Timothy Jurugo, 24, of the 32400 block of U.S. Highway 12 in Ingleside, went to Fish Lake Beach in August to meet a girl who turned out to be a Lake County sheriff's deputy, authorities said. Jurugo used a YMCA computer at Camp Duncan in Ingleside.

At a hearing in Lake County Circuit Court before Judge Christopher Starck, Assistant Public Defender Jennifer Hansen argued that Jurugo should not be sent to prison because he didn't understand that it is illegal for an adult to have sex with a minor in the U.S.

Starck issued a prison term because an exam showed Jurugo is likely to commit another sex crime if he's not treated. He w ill be deported after his term.
