Why `Baganda' do it right
By Steven Baguma

The Baganda, who hail from the Buganda kingdom in Uganda, have for a
long time been known to be hardworking, well focused and innovative
people.

In Rwanda, they are scattered around Kigali city suburbs especially
Remera-Giporoso, Gatsata and Nyamirambo and in most cases are
involved in low profile ventures like restaurants, auto repair, shoe
polishing and passenger transportation services.

Despite their modest education background, some of these people
conduct their activities in second-rate surroundings.

To the `lay men' certainly, these are always among the barriers to
business success, but to this particular group of `self-styled'
business people, despite a host of drawbacks, their business acumen
is ever stupendous.

As if outfitted with client-magnets, people trudge heaps of
kilometers in search of `Baganda services' especially as far
as `foods and beverages' are concerned. Ever wondered why?

Customer care

Without any hesitation, the number one pulling factor is embedded in
the way Baganda treat their clients, a Muganda woman on top of
warmly welcoming you to her premises, will humbly greet you with
utmost respect and care, and as their culture prescribes, never be
surprised if she kneels for a simple salutation!
After letting you feel at home, she will politely brief you about
the available goods.

I think those of you who have ever been to some Kiganda restaurants
in town are well accustomed to Luganda phrases like "Tusanyuse
okukuraba bambi, osibye otya nno ssebo, tulina matooke, enkoko,
kawo ,enyama, ebinyebwa tukuweyo kaki?" Literally meaning, "its a
great pleasure to see you dear, how was your day? We have matooke
(bananas) chicken, beef or goat meat, groundnuts, what can we offer
you?"

This praiseworthy treatment, many confess is magical in itself.
"Even if you had no intention of coming back to this particular
restaurant, the way these people handle clients definitely makes you
change your mind in favour of their services," confesses Mark
Munyaneza, a businessman in Kigali, when asked why he frequents Ewa
Hajji, a Kiganda bistro at Mirongine-Nyamirambo.

Amazing skill at work

They execute their duties skillfully as if they were formally
trained in formal academic institutions.
The owners of Japanese automobiles would attest to their business
shrewdness. Baganda motor mechanics in Gatsata, Biryogo and Giporoso
are masterminds when it comes to car repair.
"
My Daihatsu vehicle was involved in a fatal accident, and completely
lost its shape, it has been repaired with great skill as you can
see," says Ruhengeri based Jean Paul Nsanzabaganwa, as he pointed to
his well refurbished vehicle at a garage in Gatsata with high degree
of appreciation.

Loyalty to work

As a matter of fact, these people have great love and respect for
their jobs as long as they earn them a penny, a Muganda can work
until the wee hours of the morning.

As verification to this, every minute in their country is business
time! A visit to Kampala is authentication to this.
