INTERNALLY displaced persons (IDPs) in Namokora camp have accused the UPDF of harassing them.

The IDPs said soldiers ordered them to stay 20 metres away from the camp boundary. They said the order followed the loss of a gun at the barracks.

Namokora LC3 secretary for health Hellen Opira said, "The soldiers do not allow the women to fetch water or collect firewood."

Some residents said the soldiers beat them and destroyed doors to their huts. They said on December 8, the UPDF kept them in a school field for a whole day.

The 503 Brigade spokesman, Lt. Alan Tukahebwa, said, "The restriction was aimed at recovering the gun. The gun was recovered on December 15."

"Edison Olal (a civilian) picked the gun and hid it in a pit in his hut," Tukahebwa said.

He said Olal would be handed over to the Police for prosecution.
