Minister Sam
Nkusi ‘politely sacked’ By Patrick
Bigabo
Information
reaching The New Times indicates that the cabinet meeting of Monday 20, December
asked the State Minister for Energy Eng. Sam Nkusi (Pictured right) to
resign. When The New Times contacted Nkusi on phone he referred our reporter
to the appointing authority. Saying, “Talk to the appointing authority. Right
now I am in office and working”. At the time, fellow cabinet ministers and other
senior government officials were in the august house attending the second
national dialogue summit that was presided over by President Paul Kagame.
The Minister of Information, who is also the cabinet’s Spokesperson, Prof
Laurent Nkusi declined to comment on the resignation. “Where did you get those
rumours? Ask the source of those rumours to explain the circumstances under
which the alleged minister was asked to resign,” Prof. Nkusi said angrily when
contacted on phone.
“I cannot comment on
the resignation of the said minister. Read, follow and digest the
Constitution; it gives the procedures,” Prof. Nkusi said when pressed
further to explain the allegations of his cabinet colleague. When
contacted for comment on telephone the Minister in charge of the
Presidency Solina Nyirahabimana, could not pick up her phone. |

Mr. Vincent
Ryamugema, the Director of Cabinet in the Prime Minister’s office told our
reporter when contacted, “I don’t attend cabinet meetings. I’m hearing that for
the first time.” Sources close to government disclosed to The New Times that
Nkusi is a victim of corruption allegations, especially over the extraction of
Methane gas in Lake Kivu and power generation. It has been established that
technical experts some time back disclosed that if well extracted, the Methane
gas reserves in the vast Lake Kivu can sustain the country with stable energy
and power supply for a period of four hundred years. Currently, power
shortages and untimely load shedding in the city and surrounding suburbs have
not been well explained. Eng. Sam Nkusi has held several high profile jobs,
having started off as the Director General of Rwandatel, from where left to join
Electrogaz as Director General. He was finally appointed State Minister for
Energy, a position he held until the fateful Cabinet meeting.
