THE UPDF will resume operations against the LRA if Joseph Kony does not appear for the peace talks at Ngomoromo by December 31, Army Commander Lt. Gen Aronda Nyakairima has warned.

"We are observing a ceasefire as ordered by the commander-in-chief of the UPDF, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, until December 31. The Government peace team led by internal affairs minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda will go to Ngomoromo to wait for Kony's team to talk peace. If Kony does not turn up for the talks, we shall swing into full action," Nyakairima said.

"There are already bad signs because the LRA moved from Kitgum to Apac district, and violated the ceasefire and our forces have dealt with them severely," he said.

Aronda was speaking at a UPDF party organised by the Foot Soldier Foundation, Pepsi, uganda telecom, Simba telecom, Uganda Roofings and Madhvani Group.

The party, held at Pece Stadium in Gulu on Monday, was in appreciation of soldiers fighting the LRA rebels. Aronda handed over two bulls to Betty Bigombe and her peace team, who are due in Ngomoromo to meet the LRA team.

Bigombe said the bulls would help her feed her team at Ngomoromo.

She was accompanied to Pece Stadium by five peace observers, including Col. Chris Wilton, the British High Commission's military attach.

Aronda said the UPDF would not disrupt the peace talks. He said the war had taken long because Sudan supported Kony and because there was lack of cooperation between local leaders and the UPDF.

Over 1,000 civilians and the 4th Division infantry soldiers feasted on five bulls at the party.

Local musicians including Kawesa, Raggae Dee, Loketo Lee and the Sauti group entertained the soldiers.

The party was attended by state minister for education Okello Oryem, MPs from Acholi region, Gulu LC5 chairman Lt. Col Walter Ochora and the President's son, Maj. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

He said the LRA was using the ceasefire to dig up their weapons to resume fighting.
