Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Promoter, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has described as 'unfortunate' attempts by President Yoweri Museveni to seek a third term.
Muntu made the statement Tuesday night while featuring on WBS television programme "Issues at Hand" moderated by David Mushabe.

"The most unfortunate thing that will happen to this country is for Museveni to accept another term in office. We appreciate his contribution and achievements. We know he has worked hard, but it is also true that he has weaknesses," Muntu said while responding to a question by Bugembe from Jinja.
"We thought Museveni would see the country through the on-going political transition, like Nelson Mandela did for South Africa. This is an opportunity the President would lose if he pursues further his ambitions for another term in office," he said.
The General was, however, hopeful that Museveni's advisers would see the light and stop misleading him.
Muntu said it would even be most unfortunate if the President accepts to contest and loses.
"Do these people realise what such a mistake would cost the country?" he asked.
As to why he joined FDC and not the Democratic Party (DP), which has the same political ideals, Muntu said FDC was in touch with DP, and that the two political forces continued to share information.
"We shall continue to subscribe to the same ideals we fought for in the Movement. We are not turning back. We are serious people and we calculate every move we make," Muntu said.
The former Army Commander said he was sorry for some of the acts of omission or commission committed under his watch. He however said he was open to public scrutiny at all levels.
Muntu said deception and manipulation had taken the centre stage in the Movement politics.
"This is why we left. We shall organise separately but still pursuing the same political ideals we fought for," he said.
He condemned the Movement for planting people in the media to fabricate damaging stories against him. He said the truth would finally come out.
"We need to be positive and build a new culture in politics," he cautioned.

Muntu has announced before that he was up to the task to challenge President Museveni if he is chosen to lead FDC. There is also a general perception that Muntu is a dependable leader who can rise up to the challenge of leading FDC in 2006 should he be elected.
"He has served in government long enough to head a political party and has not been corrupted by power. This is what we are looking for. This is the difference between Muntu and those in the present government," another FDC promoter Augustine Ruzindana said recently.
