KAMPALA Major donor nations to Uganda have urged the government and the rebel Lord's Resistance Army to achieve peace this year. In a statement issued on Friday, the Donor Group on Northern Uganda, Amnesty and Recovery from Conflict (DG NARC) said achieving peace should be the priority of both the Uganda government and the rebels. "The members of DG NARC continue to follow developments in northern Uganda despite the difficulties faced by the government negotiating team and the LRA in reaching an agreement leading to peace talks," reads the statement. "We urge all the stakeholders to continue their efforts and build on the momentum already achieved by returning to a constructive dialogue." The DG NARC is made up of ambassadors/heads of mission from the EU, the United Nations and the United States. Pledging continued support for the peace process and reconstruction of post-conflict northern Uganda, donors urged the government "to continue to focus their main efforts on the peaceful resolution of the conflict". They also asked "the LRA leadership to commit itself to further dialogue". Fighting between rebels and government troops resumed in the north after attempts to sign a permanent ceasefire agreement on New Year's eve as a precursor to peace talks failed. |
