Museveni vows to continue fighting just wars

GUARD OF HONOUR: Museveni inspects a guard of honour at Bombo army headquarters yesterday, to end the Army Day celebrations

By Emmy Allio

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has vowed to continue fighting just wars.

Speaking at the 24th anniversary celebrations of the National Resistance Army, now the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, Museveni said, We will only identify with just wars. As he spoke rain fell in torrents. The ceremony took place at Bombo Army Headquarters.

Museveni said foreigners had no moral right to lecture Ugandans about democracy.

They denied our people democracy for over 70 years, he said.

The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, the First deputy Prime Minister, Lt. Gen. Moses Ali, and diplomats attended the occasion, commonly referred to as Tarehe Sita.

Sudan was represented by deputy security chief Maj. Gen. Maahjaoub Ahmed Abdalla, Kenya by deputy chief of staff, Brig. Gen. Njoroge, Tanzania by Tindamanyire and Rwanda by Maj. Gen. Kalanzi Kaleke. The US Joint Chief of Staff, Gen. Richard Mayers, sent congratulatio ns. ( and why is the US sending Congratulatory messages? Museveni so called "revolution" has been marked by tremendous suffering of our people in Uganda for now close to 20 years!! The US should not and  and cannot send the so called "congratulation" message..what are they congratulating???? .. the suffering of our people> this is  Nonsense!!

The army brass band performed, while dancing groups that included Congolese wives of the soldiers, entertained guests.

Museveni said he committed his life since 1971 to fight just wars. He said 1971-81 was the first phase, during which he fought remnants of the Kings African Rifles under Idi Amin.

February 6, 1981, he said, was the start of a second phase of the liberation war, during which he fought politicians who did not know what the people wanted.
Museveni said just wars were waged when people were denied democracy. He said, When peaceful avenues fail, you go to war to bring demo cracy.

He said unjust wars were fought against colonisation, the lack of democracy, and the grabbing of national resources by another country.

Museveni said there was hope that the northern war would end soon because Sudan and Uganda are on the same side.

He said the defence budget had been increased to enable acquisition of better weaponry and improved logistics.

Defence state minister Ruth Nankabirwa and army chief Lt. Gen. Nyakairima Aronda warned politicians who are bent on dividing the army during the transition. Our army is highly politicised and will repel them. We shall stop these politicians, Nankabirwa said.

Aronda said, This freedom we fought to bring should not be used to divide Ugandans. He said the army would be neutral during the transition period but will stop any form of dictatorship.

Aronda said the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels were re-organising in eastern Congo and said Uganda had warned Kinshasa and the UN about the threat. We cannot continue to watch endlessly. We are prepared for it, he said.

Aronda said Kony rebels had no option but to surrender because they have lost their sanctuaries, have no logistical supplies, have no abducted people and their command structure has been destroyed.

He said the army would erect monuments for fallen heroes since 1971.

The one in Kabamba Barracks in Mubende would bear names of the first 27 fighters, including that of NRA founder Museveni.
