NSSF official fears for life

By Mary Karugaba

A MANAGER with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has said he has received death threats from individuals accusing him of leaking information about misappropriation of funds in the body by the board.

Isaac Mwesigwa, the project manager, told MPs on the select committee probing mismanagement of funds in NSSF, that the working environment had became unbearable.

He said he was planning to resign. The committee was chaired by Okoro MP Simon DUjanga.

Without mentioning names, Mwesigwa said he had reported the matter to the Police and was planning to resign once investigations were complete.

In one of the emails seen by The New Vision, the sender wondered what Mwesigwa was thinking to release information about NSSF to the press.

What were you thinking by giving such information? Who told you there was a scandal? the email said.

Mwesigwa said he was being victimised because he was against som e of the decisions that were made by the board that led to the scandal.

I am not ready to sacrifice my life because of a job. The working conditions at NSSF are so hostile that there is no more talking especially from those people who were close to the board members. They hate us because they think we are the ones who led to the sacking of their colleagues, he said.

He said wrongdoing was still going on at NSSF and sacking the board had not helped because the Government treated the symptoms and not the root cause.

Mwesigwa requested the Government to appoint a new board to solve the problems the fund is facing especially in decision-making.

The workers money is now more at risk because it is not being invested. Most of the decisions are supposed to be taken by the board and not management. Now that they are not there, there is a problem because there is no one to make decisions, he said.

However, DUjanga assured Mwesigwa of protection.

He said Parliament would provide him with security if his life is being threatened after giving the parliament the right information.

He attributed the NSSF mess to the former chairman of the board, Onegi Obel, whom he said would not heed advice given to him by the technical team.
