Govt Recruits 200 LDUs to Back Up Army

Two hundred Local Defence Unit soldiers were on Thursday recruited in the district as a back up force to the regular army.
The recruits, among whom were two women, were transferred for military drills at the UPDF 4th Division headquarters in Gulu on Friday morning.

They will be trained in handling small weapons, tactical surveillance and field deployment and manoeuvres, a military source said.
The army Spokesperson in West Nile, Lt. Anech Mubangizi, told The Monitor on Friday that the militia force is to bolster the cross border monitoring in the neighbouring Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Porous boundary with the vast two unstable territories has been a major security concern since they are seen as conduits for small arms proliferation that are believed to end up in hands of arms buyers for the People's Redemption Army (PRA) rebel group.
"We recruit according to the fragility and necessity of a region they (LDUs) will serve,"Lt. Mubangizi said.
