General General, Brief

Twenty dead, about 500 houses burned and over 1000 refugees have resulted from an attack against villages in the Butumba area, in northern Katanga, the diamond rich region of the democratic republic of Congo. The UN Humanitarian Affairs Office OCHA in Lubumbashi, in the southeastern part of former Zaire announced the news. The violent episode took place early in the week, when Mayi-Mayi formations, a traditional militia considered pro-government, raided a few villages accusing the population of having hidden bicycles promised for combatants that are involved in a disarmament program. Unspecified popular defense forces intervened against the Mayi-Mayi causing a dozen victims among the inhabitants and at least 7 dead among the militiamen themselves. OCHA will send a joint inquiry mission to evaluate the damages and the humanitarian needs of the refugees. On a different note, in Nyoka, not far from the ci ty of Kamina, a group of Mayi-Mayi fighters has put down its weapons and accepted to take up carpentry producing chairs and desks that have been used by the school of the village.
