The army has reacted angrily to an alleged probe of Uganda on arms trafficking by the United Nations Observer Mission in Congo (MONUC).
Sources said MONUC last weekend sent a team to Ntoroko in Bundibugyo district and Paidha in Nebbi district to inquire about arms trafficking from Uganda to militia groups in Ituri.
"There are no arms from Uganda to Congo. This is a fact. We are saddened to learn that MONUC is making inquiries instead of believing us," army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza said yesterday.
The acting Chief of Military Intelligence, Lt. Col. James Mugira, said, "MONUC is acting on misinformation. Some people are bent on destroying the existing good relations we are enjoying with the Kinshasa government."

Bantariza said, "We have told MONUC to deploy its troops on the borders and establish patrols. They should arrest anybody entering Congo with guns. If they have not done that, then they are to blame.
"We shall not allow a few people to soil the good relations we are enjoying with the transitional government in Kinshasa."
