Asia, Africa mustn't underplay strengths:
Mbeki
Saturday April 23, 2005 11:40 - (SA)
For Africa and Asia to create a new world order responsive to their peoples' needs, the two blocks must not underestimate their collective strength to overcome the devastating legacies of colonialism and Western imperialism, President Thabo Mbeki told the Asia-Africa conference in Jakarta. Speaking at the start of a two-day summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, Mbeki
urged leaders from both continents to follow in the footsteps of the "Bandung class of 1955", which refused to succumb to those who "appointed themselves our masters". The Jakarta summit marks the 50th anniversary of the anti-colonial
Bandung conference. The aim of the summit is to promote Afro-Asian economic and cultural co-operation. The two regions - which now account for more than 70% of the world's
population - are seeking to stimulate economic growth, with Africa vowing to learn from the Asia bloc's economic successes of the past decade, South Africa's State news agency BuaNews reported. Paying tribute to the "liberation fighters" who met in Bandung, Mbeki,
the former chairman of the African Union, reminded the audience of the "victorious struggles waged by those whom the colonisers had defined as sub-human". "Surely, the objectives we seek to achieve demand of us that we should
be frank and open about the reality we face, estimate our capabilities as accurately as possible, and set ourselves achievable goals, consistent with the vision spelt out by the giants who met in Bandung". "There is no doubt that we can report to our people that we are today
stronger than we were 50 years ago that we have much better possibilities to achieve the vision of 1955 than the generation of '55 had,' he said." The Mulindwas Communication Group
