President Yoweri Museveni will have to relinquish power once he loses in the 2006 elections.

The Deputy Executive Coordinator for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Mr Augustine Ruzindana, said once the Constitution is changed to allow Museveni seek a third term, he should relinquish power gracefully if he is defeated.

"If the results show that he has lost the election he has no choice but to go," he said.

Ruzindana was speaking at Kagongi Primary School at a consultative meeting with residents over the weekend.

He said Museveni would only stay in power if he rigged the election and used force.

Ruzindana said violence could be minimised by holding elections of the president, parliament and local council on the same day.

"Having such an election on the same day and massively recruiting agents to guard the ballot boxes would reduce the level of cheating," he said.

"These agents would be too many to bribe," Ruzindana said.

He advised the people to stop fearing violence and organise themselves in masses to resist intimidations especially by state agents.

He said they should not worry about rigging elections but on failing to vote.

"Our fear should not be rigging but people failing to turn up to vote," he said.

The area MP, Maj. John Kazoora, said it was absurd that people still feared their president.

"It is absurd that 20 years down the road, people still fear their president, are beaten and forced to vote for him," he said.

"Let us not be reminded of the bush, where some of us, young and handsome as we were, came out with deformities," Kazoora said.
