Insecurity At Lake Edward Worries Boss

The LC5 Chairman, Mr Logino Ndyanabo, has decried the increased insecurity at Lake Edward.
He said armed Congolese nationals, who destroy fishing boats, nets and kidnap Ugandan fishermen for unknown reasons caused the insecurity.
Ndyanabo was on Monday speaking at an international conference on the Great Lakes region.
The conference was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at White Horse Inn in Kabale.
He expressed fears of fish extinction on the lake arguing that the Congolese fishermen use under-sized fishing nets to catch young fish.
"I suggest that the government should deploy security patrol boats to crack down those causing the insurgency on the lake," he said.
The Resident District Commissioner of Kanungu, Can. Ben Ruronga, said some Uganda-Congo border posts were managed by untrained officials.
"This has increased the number of illegal immigrants," he said.
He said, "The government should look into this matter very seriously as we aim at reducing the number of illegal immigrants," he said.
The Resident District Commissioner of Kisoro decried the increased numbers of illegal immigrants from Rwanda and the DRC.
He suggested that national identity cards should be issued to all Ugandans so that illegal entrants could be easily identified.
The security officials reported that there was illegal trafficking in fire arms from the DRC to Uganda by Congolese.
They said the Congolese were exchanging the guns for food.

The meeting coordinator, Mr Katurebe, asked district leaders to cooperate with the media.
He said it would help to highlight border issues with the aim of promoting good relations with neighbours.
