UPC to Boycott Referendum

THE Uganda People's Congress (UPC) will boycott the 2005 referendum and challenge its constitutionality before court.
Addressing a press conference at Uganda House on Wednesday, the Constitutional steering Committee (CSC) chairman, Badru Wegulo, said together with the G6 (group of six main opposition parties), they had already filed the constitutional petition.

"The slated referendum on political systems is a continuation of the two-decade political fraud wilfully committed and perpetuated by the NRM, using manipulation in total disregard of the people's fundamental rights and freedoms," Wegulo said.
He said UPC, like it had done before, would not surrender to 'this fraud' and subjection of people's rights and freedoms to a fraudulent referendum process.
He said UPC would do all it takes to pro-actively oppose the referendum.

"On top of this court process, UPC will mount a vigorous campaign against misuse of scarce public resources for the benefit of a clique of senior ministers and officials, whom we hope the Vice-President will soon name for the benefit of all," he said.
Wegulo said the movement had now resorted to hounding its founders like Brig. Henry Tumukunde "of the 2001 election fraud."
