Former rebels of the Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD), have organized themselves in a political party and won an absolute majority in the city municipal elections held last Friday according to results announced by national radio. The national Council for the Defense of Democracy (Cndd) the government formation replacing the Fdd after signing an understanding with authorities in 2003 has won 79 seats of 109 examined so far out of a total 129 municipalities, where citizens voted for local councils for the first time since independence in 1962. Meanwhile, the national independent electoral commission (Ceni), announced that voting will be repeated in 5 districts, because of violent episodes that took place during voting last Friday featuring at least one victim and some wounded. The UN mission in Burundi, ONUB, announced that the attendance at the polls was 72%, in the first electoral day of a series that includes the direct ballot elections of senators in July, the designation of representatives by the newly elected municipal counselors and in August the choice for the new head of state by 2 branches of parliament. The vote is a decisive step toward a transition to democracy after 12 years of civil war, which caused over 300,000 victims since 1993. [CO] | |
