UK Warns Govt Over Harassing Opposition

The British High Commissioner to Uganda has warned against intimidation of opposition members especially the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
"Indeed, newspaper reports of FDC supporters being arrested for carrying FDC T-shirts near Parliament and of an FDC rally being blocked by the UPDF in Gulu suggest this might already be occurring, contrary to the government's stated position," Adam Wood, the outgoing envoy told over 600 guests who had turned up for Queen Elizabeth's birthday party in Kampala on Monday.
Rugunda was among the guests at the party.
"This will help no one. I am confident that you, as the Interior Minister (Ruhakana Rugunda) and as a figure respected for his ability to smooth troubled waters, know the dangers better than me and will use your authority to good effect," he added.
"As I leave ,my thoughts run farther ahead. They take me into an area that is directly relevant to your responsibilities. And to your recognised qualities," he said.

Wood referred to President Yoweri Museveni's emphasis in his State of the Nation address on "how important it will be to avoid emotion and sectarianism as Uganda moves to pluralist politics."
He said fear is not healthy and it is important for sustained stability in any country for people to exercise democracy.
