Fort PortalThe gunmen who abducted people in Kyenjojo district on Sunday were thugs and not rebels, the UPDF spokesman, Lt Col. Shaban Bantariza, has said. "We have established that they were thugs who abducted the locals as punishment for not having money on them," Bantariza said yesterday.
Security sources in Kyenjojo said all the people who were abducted earlier were released towards daybreak. They had been abducted by two gunmen wielding a sub-machine gun, a panga and axes.

But the "thugs" hit again on Monday night and abducted four more people in Kamihanda village. The names of the abducted men had not yet been established by press time.
The LC3 chairman of the Katooke sub-county, Mr Leonard Rwamwenge, said the men were suspected rebels. He said the men armed with a gun and pangas, looted drugs from Kyabiranju village in Myeru parish and uprooted cassava before heading towards Muzizi forest.
Rwamwenge, who described the situation as "alarming," said over 100 villagers had abandoned their homes and run to the trading centres for safety for fear of more attacks. One of the returnees, Ms Joyce Mbabazi, said the men totaling about six told them that they were attached to renegade officer, Col Samson Mande.
The abductees said the men, who spoke broken Swahili, Rutoro, Luganda and Runyankole, told them that come 2006, they should vote for FDC.
Bantariza refuted claims that the men were attached to the PRA, saying they were mere "masqueraders." "Kyenjojo is too far away from the PRA operating zones near the border with DRC. These are just armed thugs," Bantariza said.
