Girl in trouble over FDC prayer
HUSSEIN BOGERE
KAMPALA
A STUDENT of Nyakasura School has got herself in trouble with local security officials in Fort Portal for reciting a prayer criticising the third term at the launch of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) office.
Officials from the Resident District Commissioner's (RDC) office and the District Internal Security Officer (Diso) are reported to have spent two hours interrogating Charlotte Katutu, the 17-year-old student for reciting a prayer which also praised FDC, an opposition party. The launch of the party was on Sunday, a day before the security officials interrogated Katutu, a S.4 candidate.
The prayer is composed along the structure of the Lords Prayer.
Speaking to journalists yesterday, the acting FDC Chairperson, Ms Salaamu Musumba, said the school administration had scared the girl because of expressing her mind.
"We should condemn the pattern of intimidation. The officers from the RDCs office went to the school at night for interrogation. It took them two hours," Musumba said at the party's headquarters.
Prof. Ogenga Latigo, FDC's vice-chairperson, said the headmaster of the school, Mr Wilfred Ochan, has now been labelled a recruiter for the People's Redemption Army (PRA).
They are now saying he is recruiting for PRA because he is an Acholi, Latigo said. PRA is a shadowy rebel group that is linked to FDC by government security officials.
Ochan responds
But Ochan, while speaking to Daily Monitor yesterday dismissed the PRA links. He confirmed that officials from the District Internal Security Organisation and the political mobiliser from the RDC's office had visited the school to interrogate Katutu. "They met us on Monday afternoon. They wanted to know why she composed the prayer and how she did it.
They also wanted to know whether that is the stand of the school. That is why they told her to re-write it and re-cite it," Ochan said.
He also told the Daily Monitor by telephone that Katutu made a statement before the security officials.
The RDC could not be reached for comment because he didn't answer his phone. Ochan, who was in Kampala at the time of the incident, said the girls mother, Ms Nyakato Rusoke, an FDC supporter in the area, picked her from school without the permission of the school authorities.
"But she is back in school," Ochan said.
The Prayer:
Our father, Who art in FDC
Hallowed be Mugisha Muntu
Thy leadership come
Thy will be done to Corruption
As it is to Embezzlement
Give us your ideas, our only stand
And forgive Museveni
As we forgive the so called Movementists
Lead us not into third term
But deliver us from it
For thine is the Leadership
Eria Kategaya, Salaamu Musumba,
Maria Matembe are yours
Now and forever
AMEN
