ABOUT 40 Congolese fighters belonging to the rebel RCD Goma and 100 civilians have crossed to Uganda following heavy fighting that took place Friday night in Ishasha area of DR Congo.

The UPDF Division 2 spokesman, Lt Chris Magezi, told Daily Monitor on Saturday that the rebel fighters fled the heavy fighting.

Magezi however, said the UPDF was arranging a safe passage back home for both the fleeing Congolese rebels and civilians who fled to the Uganda border district of Kanungu on Friday.
"There was heavy fighting between the Mai Mai forces and RCD Goma fighters on Friday night till morning and this has resulted into fleeing of people into our territory," Magezi said.

He said as a result some bombs and bullets strayed into Ugandan territory injuring one man (whose names were not readily available) in the stomach.

He assured Ugandans that the situation is under control although people in Kanungu district are living in fear over the fighting.

"Although the fighting was very near our border, our border line was not breached," Magezi said.
He said the UPDF was monitoring the situation and there should be no cause for alarm.

He urged Ugandans to remain calm. "Our forces on the border are very alert and monitoring the situation and would respond accordingly," he said.

He said the wounded soldiers and civilians camped in Ishasha Uganda sector, have started getting treatment from the Ugandan side and would be treated as the Ugandan laws demand.
"The civilians will be treated according to the Ugandan laws and the soldiers have been disarmed and would also be treated accordingly," he said.

He warned that should DR Congo attack Uganda, the UPDF would be more than ready to defend its territorial integrity.
"Should we be attacked, the UPDF would be more than ready to defend Uganda and her people," Magezi said.

Magezi said the UPDF is arranging a safe passage to help both groups back home.
