World Vision International has called for urgent help to end the rebellion in northern Uganda that has left tens of thousands of people dead and over 1.4 million people living in refuge camps.

Luther Bois Anukur, the World Vision (WV) national director in Uganda, told a news conference here on Wednesday that the world's attention must be focused to the tragedy being committed in northern Uganda.

He said that the rebellion in northern Uganda is one of the worst conflicts in the world today.

He said the World Vision declared northern Uganda a Category III Humanitarian Emergency following what he described as a pathetic situation in the region, adding that three out of 10,000 children and one per 10,000 adults in the region die a day.

The World Vision is going to double its work in northern Uganda following the worsening situation in the region, Anukur said.

He noted that it is going to put more emphasis on the sectors of HIV/AIDS, education and rehabilitation and provision of psychosocial therapy for former child soldiers and child mothers.

The World Vision is an international charity organization that operates in about 100 countries with its headquarters in California of the United States. Currently it spends 12 million US dollars as its annual budget for different operations in northern Uganda.

The rebel Lord's Resistance Army has been fighting the Ugandan government in the region for 19 years. The efforts to end the rebellion failed after the rebels refused to sign a final peace deal with government in late last year.
