The wife to jailed Rukungiri District Speaker Mr George Owakukiroru has appealed to the international community to intervene in her husband's case who has been on remand on treason charges since December 2004. Owakukiroru is also the Chairman of the Forum for Democratic Change in Rukungiri district.
Ms Gertrude Owakukiroru has taken her case to the International Committee of Red Cross and international human right groups. In a letter dated August 24 addressed to the two international organisations, Gertrude says her husband's right finger was injured in an accident in 2004 and it has continued to deteriorate while in prison.
"It is unfortunate that after eight months the government has not brought any credible evidence to incriminate my husband bearing in mind that he was arrested on his way to hospital in Nairobi where he had been referred to by a surgeon at Mulago Hospital," the letter reads.
