| Garang helicopter was sound, says manufacturer
|
|
By Ken Ramani The manufacturer of the helicopter in which former Sudanese vice-president John Garang died yesterday said Òit was in good conditionÓ. ÒThe crash did not appear to have been caused by any technical malfunction,Ó said Rudolf Temurazov, the director of technical security for the Moscow-based Interstate Aviation Committee of the 12-nation Commonwealth of Independent States. Garang and 13 others died on July 30 after the Russian-built military Mi-172 helicopter belonging to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni crashed in southern Sudan. The crash occurred at a mountainous region as he was returning home from Kampala where he had met Museveni. Temurazov said one of the two flight data recorders on the helicopter was recovered in good condition, while the other, which registers technical functions, was reportedly destroyed. He declined to give details of the conversations recorded before the crash, saying the flight voice recorder picked up comments in four languages. InvestigatorsÕ conclusion that the crash was not caused by technical malfunction was based on English conversations in the cockpit and between the pilot and the dispatcher, describing them as ÒstandardÓ until the crash. The investigators found no suggestion of a mechanical fault. |
