KAMPALA, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- A group of armed thugs attacked a prison in Adjumani district in northwestern Uganda, according to local reports on Thursday. James Byabasaija, the commissioner of the prisons was quoted assaying that the thugs who were about five in number attacked Openzinzi Prison on Wednesday morning. Three of them were in camouflage uniforms and possessed guns. They broke the gates to the four prison wards and set free about 50 inmates. Byabasaija said the cells had 346 inmates at the time of attack, adding that the government army arrived in time to beef up the prison services team and pursued the attackers. More than 17 prisoners had been re-arrested by Wednesday afternoon, he said. He dismissed claims that they could have been rebels, saying that this was a work of mere thugs who may have wanted to rescue their arrested colleagues.
