China to be world's top exporter by 2010

(BizWorld)

The OECD predicts that China's economy could overtake those of all but three of its 30 members in size and topple the US as the world's biggest exporter in five years.

It said that the ranking for 2010 would be measured in current prices and exchange rates, adding that China could by then account for 10pc of global trade in goods and services. In its first economic survey of China, the OECD lauds the country's massive expansion over the past two decades, which has seen gross domestic product (GDP) grow at 9.5pc a year, and predicts a strong expansion will continue for some time.

"Such an increase in output represents one of the most sustained and rapid economic transformations seen in the world economy in the past 50 years," it said.

The report attributes the country's new economic might to "extremely bold" government reforms that have tipped the economy in favor of an increasingly large and efficient private sector.

"Few OECD member governments have embarked on reforms that have restructured or closed hundreds of state enterprises every month over a five-year period - a development that is still continuing - or have ended lifetime employment practices and, in the process, stimulated a nationwide reallocation of resources," the report said.

The OECD said it believes China's official goal of increasing GDP four-fold between 2000 and 2020, implying an average annual growth of just over 7pc, is feasible.

It forecasts real GDP growth rates of nine pct for this year, noting it should edge upwards to 9.2pc next year, with inflation steady at four pct across 2005-2006.
