LRA REBELS DENY ATTACK IN SOUTH SUDAN
Miscellaneous Miscellaneous, Brief

In a surprising press statement – on which there are no independent confirmations – the Ugandan rebels of the LRA (lord’s Resistance Army) denied any involvement in attacks of the past days in South Sudan, along the road that takes from Yei to Juba. “For those who know the field, it is technically and logistically impossible for the LRA to organise a similar operation”. According to the BBC, the rebels – normally active in North Uganda, but with frequent incursions in South Sudan, where for years they maintain bases – the rebels for the first time crossed the White Nile River, a sort of natural border of their attacks in Sudanese territory. In the document, the rebels exclude the possibility of crossing the river in the three main passage points, presided – always according to the rebels – by the Ugandan army, which is authorised to operate in South Sudan, and by the SPLA (Sudan People’s Liberation Army), whi ch after signing the recent peace accords carry out functions of territorial defence along with the government forces. The SPLA yesterday referred that it launched a military operation against the Ugandan rebels.
