President Clinton is hosting a high profile meeting in New York  to try to
highlight the world most pressing problems and seek to solve them. The list
of attendees looks like a who is who in the world of business, diplomacy,
politics and academia. African problems are high on the agenda and the most
influential leaders in Africa have been invited to the conference. Guess who
does and doesnot make it to the list; Kagame makes it , Thabo Mbeki as well
as Obasanjo are also there. But imagine if this conference was held just two
years ago; the first African leader on the list would have been Museveni.
Moreover many East and central African leaders had to travel from their
countries to Entebbe Uganda to have a hand shake with Clinton when he
visited Africa in 1998. Today thats history and the leaders in the group
that is a thorn to Museveni are dinning with Clinton and having numerous
interviews in the American media as Museveni looks on in desbelief. Museveni
had the best opportunity to make himself a statesman but he has squandered
it because of the greed for power. Just few years ago people were not afraid
to put him in the Club of the Mandelas and Nyereres ; but see what has
happened to him. No leader now wants to associate with him- he is now
treated more like a political leper. Ladies and Gentlemen, who bewitched
Uganda? How come we do'nt seem to produce anything good. Yesterday I was
listening to Kagame on one of the many American media houses where he was
giving an interview and for once I felt I should be a Munyarwanda not a
Ugandan I have always been proud to be. The guy delivered a cool and
calculated analysis and prognosis of the problems of Rwanda and I thought;
its as well he has replaced Museveni on the list of the "new breed" ( I hate
this phrase because it bewitches) of leaders in Africa. But on further
reflection I thought; but we cannot migrate to Rwanda or sit down and
dispair- lets continue the struggle ; maybe the true Ugandan hero may emerge
from the ashes of the now deciminated and disgraced Museveni. Keep on the
struggle.
