"But going by past records, it was likely caused by poor fire management, especially by children in this dry season. It spread quickly due to congestion and the windy atmosphere." Deadly fire outbreaks have in the past been registered in different camps in Kitgum, Pader and Gulu districts.
OVER 40 huts in Purongo Internally Displaced People's camp in Gulu district were on Sunday burnt to ashes leaving hundreds of residents homeless.
Purongo is sandwiched between Agung and Wii-Anaka IDP centres on the northern frontier of Murchison Falls National Park along the West Nile highway.
Some women, who lost their only belongings in the inferno, threw themselves down, wailing and cursing themselves.
On the eastern flank of the ill-fated Purongo, a group of distraught residents stood atop a spot with their hands clasped across their bare chests, watching in disbelief.
Some men braved the fire and jumped to remove grass from the rooftops that had not yet caught fire.
Daily Monitor was unable to reach the out-going Gulu district chairman, Col. Walter Ochora or the district chairman elect, Nobert Mao.
"We have not established what caused the fire in the camp," the army Spokesman for northern Uganda, Lt. Chris Magezi said.

Last month while campaigning in Acholi sub-region, President Yoweri Museveni promised Shs50, 000 to every family affected by the fire.
If and when the LRA's insurgency which has displaced nearly two million Acholis ends as antici
pated,
the government has unveiled a comprehensive resettlement package, that will be given to IDPs to start a normal life.
