FRESH START: Orombi (holding folder) and other bishops at the ceremony |
| By Jude Etyang THE Church of Uganda has thrown out clergymen from the stalled sh25b Church House project and handed it over to a new board of directors dominated by city businessmen. The 29-year-old project has failed to take off throughout the reigns of four archbishops. Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, while commissioning the new board of directors of the Church House Company (CHC), yesterday vowed, Before I retire there has to be a visible Church House, even if its one floor standing. The CHC is responsible for fundraising, building and managing the building after its completion. Orombi confessed that the clergymen had been lazy and that they were not good at doing business. In that regard, a new board was appointed by the board of trustees of the Church House Holding Company, headed by Orombi. The Archbishop, in a ceremony at his Namirembe Hill residence, also commissioned a new board of directors of the Church Commissioners Holdings Company Ltd. (CCHC), the business arm of the Church, which owns assets and manages its property, worth billions in real estate and land. The CCHC board that includes Forum for Democratic Change financier James Musinguzi Garuga, is a clear indication of the Church entrusting its business with laymen. The Provincial Secretary, the Rev. Aaron Mwesigye Kafundizeki, revealed that of the sh25b required for the construction of the Church House, only sh720m had been raised. The planned 16-storey building is to go up on Plot 34, Kampala Road, to generate income for the Church. Orombi said the dominance of clergy in the project had to change, since priests were well schooled in managing Gods work and not income-generation. We have been sitting, we havent worked. So, the sin we, the Church, have to confess is the sin of laziness, Orombi said. However the outgoing board chairman of the CCHC Bishop William Magambo, defended his team saying they tried their best but failed due to multiple factors. The new Church House board is chaired by Bishop Stanley Ntagali of Masindi. Ends Published on:
